Society 1 first rose to notoriety in 1999 with
its debut album, "Slacker Jesus", earning massive press coverage
through such media outlets as MTV, VH1, Billboard, Details, Rolling
Stone, Spin, Revolver, and Kerrang!. Adding to the media frenzy was the
fact that frontman Matt Zane was an acclaimed porn director, gaining
worldwide infamy for his "Backstage Sluts" series, a series of films
which matched porn stars with such real-life rockers as Limp Bizkit's
Fred Durst, Korn's Jonathan Davis, and Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath.
Society 1's second album, "Exit Through Fear", was released worldwide
in the Spring of 2003 on Earache Records. Society 1's first video,
"Nothing", (in which Zane performs the first real "suspension" ever
done by a singer in a music video), aired regularly on Uranium on Fuse
TV, along with a special episode of Uranium devoted entirely to the
making-of the "Nothing" video. By the end of 2003, Society 1 had
completed more touring than any other Earache band that year,
supporting such acts as Dope, Twiztid, and Pissing Razors on marathon
coast-to-coast tours.
In March 2004, Zane took his suspension feat to the next level, making
himself the first singer to ever sing live while suspended. Drawing
over 700 fans to LA's Key Club, The Lord performed three songs live
with Society 1 whilst hanging up to 30 feet above the stage, supported
only by six meathooks inserted in his flesh. Orgy frontman Jay Gordon
made a special guest appearance on vocals. The "Suspension Show" marked
Society 1's final U.S. show in support of "Exit Through Fear". In May
2004 Society 1 took their brand of rock n' roll debauchery to Europe,
in support of Godhead, for their first tour outside of the U.S.
Following the tour, the band entered the studio to begin recording
their third album (their second for Earache): "The Sound That Ends
Creation". Meanwhile, Society 1's third video, "Hate", went into
rotation on MTV2's Headbangers Ball and Fuse's Uranium.
In March 2005, Zane and his band of misanthropic thrill-seekers
returned with the next chapter in the Society 1 saga: "The Sound That
Ends Creation". The follow-up to their Earache debut, "Exit Through
Fear", "The Sound That Ends Creation" sees Society 1 expanding its
musical and lyrical vision and more fully conveying the entire Society
1 experience. The band's trademark industrial-metal shock-rock stomp is
still in full effect ("It Isn't Me", "Lord"), but also rearing its head
is a more timeless, groove-laden rock approach ("No Father", "Realms Of
Bliss"), making it clear Society 1 is delving further and further back
into rock history for inspiration. Zane's psycho-sexual occultist
lyrics have always delivered stab wounds to the chest of the
conservative status quo, and on "The Sound That Ends Creation" Zane
spirals deeper and deeper into his twisted world, all the while
exposing the devil in us all with crystal clarity. With its theatrical,
aggressive, confrontational style and its heavy, anthemic sound,
Society 1 is proving itself to be an heir to a long, exalted tradition
of incendiary, controversial rock outfits, from The Doors to Alice
Cooper to KISS to Jane's Addiction to Marilyn Manson.
Recorded by Wade Norton (Static-X) at NRG Studios (Beck, Linkin Park),
"The Sound That Ends Creation" is the album that finally defines the
essence of Society 1, giving the listener a revelatory glimpse into the
band's esoteric, unattainable world. "The Sound That Ends Creation" is
the sound of Hollywood excess, backstage debauchery, porno sleaze,
Morrisonesque bad trips, and deadly Satanic rites -- essentially, the
realization of man's darkest impulses. It is the contradictory sound of
glamor and horror, sex and violence, pleasure and pain.
To further expose the world of Society 1 to the masses, the first
pressing of "The Sound That Ends Creation" includes a limited edition
bonus DVD, "The Creation Of Sound". "The Creation Of Sound" contains a
35-minute documentary featuring blistering live footage and uncensored
backstage antics from Society 1's 2003 US and European tours, as well
as a virtual book of Zane's poetry.
Equally the most debaucherous AND disciplined band on the scene today
(on one hand, indulging in onstage and backstage antics only an ex-porn
director could dream up; on the other hand, completing more tourdates
last year than any other Earache band, and making history with Zane's
unbelievable
record-breaking "Suspension Show"), Society 1 is a true anomaly on the
face of modern culture. Instilling mortal fear in conservatives,
unbearable lust in schoolgirls, and blind loyalty in fans across the
nation, Society 1 are the real deal. While other bands dabble in occult
imagery for shock value or make false boasts of backstage conquests,
Society 1 are truly living the life -- and polarizing the world into
enemies and converts, along the way. Society 1 is a band of extreme
people doing extreme things. Jump on board their hellbound caravan or
fester and perish in your self-imposed cage of mediocrity!
